Urban quality of life through textile architecture: the sun sail on St. Aegidi village square
The redesign with the sun sail has given the centre of St. Aegidi at the village square by the Kirchenwirt a new heart. As a central meeting point for festive events, churchgoers and daily dining, the project faced one key task: to turn the broad, exposed square into a premium space to linger, with no heavy structure.

The challenge: keep it open, offer protection
Public squares often suffer from summer overheating, which sharply cuts the time they can be used. St. Aegidi needed a solution that keeps the view of the Kirchenwirt and the townscape clear, yet offers protection over a large area. A rigid roof was ruled out for its visual weight and lack of flexibility.

The solution: made-to-measure shading as a unifying element
The finished sun-sail system spans the square as a light, elegant membrane. Through precise planning, the structure fits harmoniously into the modernised surroundings. The sail not only gives shade, it redefines the space:
Effective protection from UV radiation and light rain lets events go ahead even in changeable weather.
The sail beneath noticeably reduces the radiant heat of the paving and creates a pleasant microclimate.
The area serves the Kirchenwirt as an extended outdoor dining area and the village as a weather-protected gathering place.

Project highlights

High-tech membrane
The high-strength, waterproof membrane shields against sun and rain. So the outdoor dining area can be run profitably whatever the weather.

Less heat island
The large-area shading noticeably lowers the heating of the sealed ground and acts against the urban heat island in the centre.

Open townscape
Instead of a heavy roof, the textile membrane keeps the sightlines to church and townscape – with minimal impact on the fabric of the buildings.

Social meeting point
The square turns from a thoroughfare into a meeting point: heat protection for young and old, a sheltered spot for events, clubs and dining.
Conclusion
The shading solution in St. Aegidi shows perfectly how textile architecture strengthens the social role of a village square. The result is a place of encounter that unites aesthetics and function at the highest level.
