Sun sails for hospitality in Illertissen – the café terrace of Backhaus Häussler

In the heart of Illertissen, Backhaus Häussler runs one of its branches with a generous hospitality terrace – over 60 square metres of outdoor space where guests are meant to linger all day. Regional baking culture – traditional and trendy – meets a modern terrace ambience here. For owner Hermann Häussler, one central question arose: how do you reliably shade such a large area – without the effort and the tripping hazards of classic large parasols?

The challenge: shading 60 m² of terrace – without parasol bases and concrete slabs

Reliably shading more than 60 m² of café terrace is a real feat with classic large parasols: every base needs heavy concrete slabs, the parasols have to be set up in spring and stored away again in autumn, and the many bases and floor plates are tripping hazards in the middle of daily service. What was needed was a solution that spans the entire area, preserves the open character of the terrace – and doesn't get in the way day to day.

Two sails over the entire terrace – the open character remains

The two sails span the entire terrace and protect both the guests outside and the dining rooms behind them from direct sunlight. At the same time, the open, inviting character of the terrace is fully preserved – entirely without parasol bases, posts and floor plates in the middle of the seating area.

Control is fully automatic: in the morning the sails extend via the sun sensor, in the evening they retract again. The system is complemented by wind monitoring that provides additional safety.

Particular attention was paid to handling during ongoing service. Unlike 4×4-metre large parasols with twelve concrete slabs per base, there is no physically heavy setting up and taking down in spring and autumn – the sail extends and retracts at the push of a button.

Hermann Häussler runs several hospitality locations and consistently rethinks regional baking culture – traditional and trendy. He had the first LET sun sail installed in his own private area, simply to experience how it feels. Today he controls the sails at his locations via smart home – time-, light- and sensor-controlled – and says clearly: at the locations that allow for it, only the LET sail is an option for him.

Project highlights

NUM 1

More seats, more revenue

Without parasol bases and floor plates, real space opens up for additional seats – more seats, more revenue.

NUM 2

Shade and rain protection

The sail shades the terrace and keeps guests outside in light rain – really like a roof.

NUM 3

No heavy setup and takedown

No handling of concrete slabs in spring and autumn – the sails extend and retract at the push of a button.

NUM 4

Fully automatic with sensors

Light and wind sensors control the sails; in storms over 20 m/s they retract automatically.

Conclusion

The project in Illertissen shows how shading works in hospitality: low-maintenance, economical and with real added value for guests and operators. Two retractable sun sails that extend at the push of a button, protect against sun and rain and free up space for additional seats. If you factor in purchase, upkeep and the saved handling over the service life, the bottom line looks very different from the mere purchase price of a parasol. Or as Hermann Häussler sums it up: a great feeling – and a real enrichment for the location.
