Two sun sails on a roof terrace in the heart of Berlin – with a view of the TV Tower
On the sixth floor of an old Berlin townhouse, right in the city: here the entire top floor has been strikingly renovated and extended – the old preserved with skill and reimagined with Berlin flair. Two sun sails shade the roof terrace while keeping the view of the TV Tower clear.
Design concept
Two sails shade the roof terrace. The Trapez sun sail sits in a roller casing of non-rusting aluminium (Niro) – keeping the fabric clean and protected all winter, with no winterising needed. The second, a Doppeldreieck, shades the cosy lounging area and complements the seating perfectly. Both sails operate independently.
This keeps the roof terrace pleasantly cool all day: the windows can stay open, the heat stays out of the house. Even in strong wind the terrace stays usable – and thanks to the slim posts the view of Berlin’s TV Tower remains clear.
The project was guided by our in-house architects – from the first draft to installation. The anchorings were carried out expertly without damaging the roof; the owner valued this greatly, and the architect received all needed documents, right down to the BIM files. For our managing director, this roof terrace is one of her favourite projects.
During planning the sail was previewed on a 3D model – visible right on your phone, just as it would later appear. It is handcrafted in our manufactory in Upper Austria. So the finished sail feels not like bolted-on tech, but like a design element belonging to the architecture.

Wind- and weatherproof
Wind-sensor controlled, the Trapez sail retracts automatically in strong wind; in the Niro casing it stays clean all winter and needs no winterising.
