Sun sail for a villa in the woods by the lake near Berlin
Barely half an hour outside Berlin, in a refined neighbourhood right by the lake, stands a stately villa surrounded by greenery – a venerable period building, several storeys, facing south. On the top viewing terrace, the main living area, a made-to-measure Trapez sun sail provides shade without blocking the view into the green.
Sun protection that visually extends the villa
Together with our in-house architects we developed a solution that adapts to the style of the house instead of disrupting it – and even extends the villa visually. The Trapez sun sail now sits majestically above the terrace: elegantly clamped on, without drilling into the historic masonry. Installation was carried out to plan by our Berlin team – clean and precisely fitted to the existing structure. The sail looks as if it had always belonged to the villa.
A made-to-measure, retractable Trapez sail – precisely planned and exactly fitted
The sail spans the top viewing terrace and shields both the outdoor living area and the rooms behind it from harsh sun – without obstructing the view into the green and across the lake.
Control is fully automatic: in the morning the sail extends via the sun sensor, in the evening it retracts again. A wind sensor pulls it back by itself when wind picks up – nothing has to be operated by hand.
Particular attention was paid to architectural integration. The shading should defer to the venerable period building rather than overpower it – elegantly clamped on, without drilling into the historic masonry.
The structural elements – slender columns, posts and brackets – are kept understated and recede visually. The villa stays in the foreground, while the sail feels naturally part of it.
The sun sail noticeably reduces the heat on the south-facing terrace and keeps the living area behind it cool. The period building stays comfortably tempered even on hot summer days.
The top terrace becomes a fully fledged living space under the open sky: sheltered, quiet and usable in almost any weather – with an unobstructed view across the lake.
The sail extends automatically in the morning and retracts in the evening, controlled by light and wind sensors. In strong wind it retracts on its own and protects itself.
And when it rains – is the terrace still usable?
All-weather use is one of the most common questions – especially when the top terrace becomes the main living area. The fabric is water-repellent: light rain beads off and runs away in a controlled manner, keeping the terrace usable and dry. When heavier weather moves in, the sail retracts fully automatically and is safely stowed. That keeps the viewing terrace a reliable spot outdoors all season long – with an unobstructed view across the lake.

Yes. In an exposed lakeside setting in particular, wind stability is crucial. The Trapez sail is wind-stable up to wind force 7 (50–61 km/h). A wind sensor retracts it automatically when wind picks up – the terrace stays protected without anyone having to intervene.
No. The sail is elegantly clamped onto the existing structure, without drilling into the venerable masonry. Our Berlin team carried out the installation – clean and precisely fitted, so the villa's building fabric remains untouched.

After the consultation we captured the situation via a digital visit – entirely without an on-site appointment. The 3D model showed in advance how the sail would look. It was handcrafted in our manufactory in Upper Austria and installed by the Berlin team.
