Sun Sail for the Of Eden – Shading the Spree Terrace in Berlin

Right on the banks of the Spree in Berlin, with a view of the Oberbaumbrücke, sits the Of Eden – a place where modern Oriental-Anatolian cuisine, architecture and lifestyle come together. Generous glass surfaces, clean lines and the open waterside terrace define the venue. One central question arose here: how do you create shade at a wind-exposed location without disturbing the architecture?

The challenge: wind, strict architecture – no parasols

The terrace on the Spree is the heart of the Of Eden – open to the water, with a view of the Oberbaumbrücke. Wind funnels constantly through the gap between the buildings, and given the striking architecture the owner allowed no parasols. Classic solutions were ruled out. What was needed was shading that withstands the wind, does not cut up the seating area and defers to the building.

Sun protection that belongs to the architecture

Every project begins with the place. For the Of Eden on the Spree we created a made-to-measure sun sail that shades the open terrace without disturbing the clean waterside architecture – wind-stable and at the push of a button.

The sail spans the terrace and protects both the outdoor area and the interior behind it from direct sunlight. At the same time, the open view of the Spree stays completely clear.

Control is fully automatic:
In the morning the sail extends via the sun sensor and retracts again in the evening. The system is complemented by wind monitoring that provides added safety.

Wind resistance is the question our clients ask most – and this project shows the answer. The sun sail is wind-stable up to wind force 7 (50–61 km/h) and retracts fully automatically via the integrated wind sensor when wind picks up. So the terrace stays protected even in an exposed spot, with no one needing to step in.

Project highlights

NUM 1

Shade without losing the view

The retractable sail shades the terrace and interior without limiting the open view of the Spree and the Oberbaumbrücke.

NUM 2

Part of the architecture

Posts and brackets recede discreetly. The shading feels not technical, but a natural part of the building.

NUM 3

Fully automatic with wind sensor

Sun and wind sensors control the sail: out in the morning, in at night. In strong wind it retracts safely on its own – decisive at this exposed location.

NUM 4

Better climate indoors

The sail lowers the heat on the terrace and in the dining room – with no blinds at all. The large glass surfaces stay completely clear.

Conclusion

The Of Eden in Berlin shows how shading works in a demanding architectural context: restrained, wind-strong and precisely integrated. A retractable sun sail that defers to the building – and turns the waterside terrace into an all-day favourite spot. Or as the architect puts it: in this case there was no alternative to the sun sail.
