Wind and rain: how your sun sail behaves
An electric sun sail should cope with wind and rain without you having to keep watching. Here is how it behaves and what you should know – based on the LET operating manual.
Wind at a glance
Designed for wind force 4–5
On the Beaufort scale that is 20–38 km/h. The system is designed for this range.
Up to wind force 7 if needed
If required, the sail can also be operated up to wind force 7 (50–61 km/h). The fabric swings strongly in such conditions.
Wind sensor retracts at 4
The standard setting by our installers: at wind force 4 the wind sensor retracts the sail – unless you ask for something else.
What to watch for in wind
Note 1
The fabric must be able to swing freely. Avoid contact with mechanical parts such as grills, the house or roof structure, garden furniture or trees.
Note 2
Damage to the fabric from such contact is excluded from the warranty.
Note 3
The wind sensor needs power. If you often have power cuts, provide an emergency power supply.
The wind force at which the sail retracts can be set at installation to your wishes.
And in rain?
All sun sails can be operated in light rain. Water may seep through at the seams.
With installations that have less than 14 % slope, water can collect in the fabric (water pocket). The slope is taken into account during planning.
In rain, snowfall or wind the sail must be retracted so that nothing is damaged. How to protect your sail in winter is explained on our winterising page.
