Sun sails for the IKUNA Sternenchalets – shading a glass roof in Natternbach
At the IKUNA Nature Resort in Natternbach, the Sternenchalets pair visionary architecture with fully glazed roofs and an open view of the starry sky. The question was clear: how do you shade a glass roof that heats up by day without losing the view of the stars by night? Using the building’s digital twin, LET ran the shade simulation – giving total certainty before installation. Today the chalets are permanently booked out.

Doppeldreieck sun sail on the Sternenchalet
The Sternenchalets in Natternbach unite visionary architecture with the latest technology – a place where design and nature merge seamlessly. To complement the striking glass roof of these exceptional chalets, a made-to-measure sun sail was developed that not only offers optimal protection but also underlines the overall architectural concept. The intelligent solution responds automatically to the weather and keeps the interior pleasant all year – reliable shade by day, targeted ventilation by night.

Design concept
For the award-winning Sternenchalets with their fully glazed roofs, a made-to-measure sun sail was developed that gives effective shade by day and opens the view to the stars by night – technically refined and harmoniously integrated into the architecture.
The specially reinforced mechanism tensions the sail tightly across the entire glass surface, giving reliable protection from sun and heat with full transparency.
The sun sail opens automatically at night for ventilation and extends in the morning to create a bioclimatic interior – with no manual intervention.
The solution blends elegantly into the chalets’ visionary architecture – all the technology sits within the roller, so minimal it barely shows – while staying wind-stable, long-lasting and almost maintenance-free. A solution that convinces in form and function alike.

Video
For the Sternenchalets in Natternbach, a custom-fitted sun sail glass roof was developed that delivers maximum wind stability through its taut fabric tension and integrated mechanism. The technology hidden inside the fabric roller allows full-surface shading of the glass roofs without disturbing the architecture’s clean lines – a perfect union of aesthetics and function.
Project highlights

Full-surface shading
The made-to-measure sail tensions tightly across the entire glass roof, giving reliable protection from sun and heat – with full visibility.

Bioclimatic interior
At night the sail opens automatically to ventilate; in the morning it extends. So it stays pleasantly cool under glass – with no active cooling.

Open view of the stars
At night the open sail reveals the glazed starry sky. By day it shades reliably – the character is fully preserved.

Invisible technology
The mechanism vanishes completely into the fabric roller. The sail stays wind-stable, long-lasting and low-maintenance – with no visible technology.
Bioclimatic comfort with smart control
The intelligent sun-sail system opens automatically at night to let fresh air into the chalet and extends in the morning to keep things cool. The result is a naturally regulated climate under the glass roof – with no active cooling. The solution unites comfort, sustainability and automated climate control in a unique way.
