Two sun sails on a roof terrace in Berlin – with a view of the TV Tower

On the sixth floor of an old Berlin apartment building, the entire top storey was renovated and extended: old features skilfully preserved and carried on in Berlin style. Two sun sails now make the roof terrace usable all day – and leave the view of the TV Tower open.

The challenge: heat under the roof, wind six floors up

The roof terrace sits right at the top, without shade and exposed to the wind. The windows were to be able to stay open without the heat getting into the flat, and the roof must not be damaged during installation. What was needed was a solution that is safe in wind and does not block the view.

Roofs, shade, TV Tower

From above you can see how the two sails sit on the roof terrace. From the terrace itself the view of the city and the TV Tower stays open – only slender posts are in the picture.

The roof terrace is shaded by two sails. The Trapez sun sail sits in a stainless-steel shaft box that keeps the fabric clean over the winter – no need to winterise.

The second sail is a Doppeldreieck that complements the area.

On a roof terrace the technology has to think along. The sun sail is controlled by a wind sensor and retracts fully automatically in strong wind. Our sun sails are wind-stable up to wind force 7 (50–61 km/h). The posts are deliberately kept slender.

Project highlights

NUM 1

A cool flat

The windows stay open, the heat does not enter the flat.

NUM 2

TV Tower stays visible

Slender posts keep the view of the city open.

NUM 3

No winterising

The stainless-steel shaft box keeps the fabric clean over the winter.

NUM 4

Roof stays undamaged

The anchorings were carried out without damaging the roof.

Conclusion

The Berlin roof terrace shows how two sun sails make a top storey usable: cool rooms, a clear view of the TV Tower and technology that reacts by itself in wind.
