McDonald’s Gmunden – Sun sails instead of flying umbrellas
Loyalty, technology and fabric – sun sails for the McDonald’s Gmunden restaurant: a new look
Years ago, McDonald’s Gmunden opted for LET’s retractable sun sails designed for the catering industry when planning its outdoor areas – thereby prioritising quality, design and technology. During the extensive refurbishment of the site, the restaurant remained true to this decision and once again installed LET sun sails. A success story that demonstrates how well-designed shading solutions can enhance catering areas in the long term.
Design concept
The design concept at McDonald’s Gmunden demonstrates how a well-thought-out sunshade system can prove its worth over many years and adapt flexibly to new architectural concepts – functional, durable and perfectly suited to the day-to-day running of a restaurant.
The combination of a double triangle and a single sail provides optimal sun protection over a large area – without the hassle typically associated with conventional parasols.
The sun sails are fully integrated into the building’s technical systems and can be operated conveniently at the touch of a button or automatically.
A wind sensor ensures automatic safety: in strong winds, the sails retract automatically, thereby protecting both the equipment and the guests.

Even before the major refurbishment, McDonald’s Gmunden was ahead of its time – with a modern sun sail for the catering industry from LET. At the time, the restaurant opted for a retractable double-triangular sail in a warm mocha brown, which not only provided functional protection from the sun and rain but also created an inviting atmosphere for the outdoor area. The seamless integration into the building’s design and the control via the building management system demonstrated even back then that design, comfort and technology can go hand in hand, even in chain restaurants.

Challenges and Solutions
The first generation of sun sails as the foundation for customer loyalty
With its first installation, McDonald’s Gmunden demonstrated a pioneering spirit: the choice was deliberately made to install an automated, weather-resistant sun sail system that not only provided comfort for guests but also made day-to-day life easier for the team. The wind sensor took over the retraction process when the weather changed, and operation was intuitive via the central technical solution – an investment in quality that has paid off. The fact that the customer chose LET again years later speaks to trust, durability and a long-standing commitment to good design.
